Bennett pourrait coiffer une nouvelle couronne Européenne à Assen

LES CHAMPIONS 2007 ET 2008 FACE-À-FACE

L’épreuve de Superkart la plus populaire de la saison, le «Rizla Racing Day» à Assen (Pays-Bas), couronnera ce dimanche 9 août le Champion d’Europe CIK-FIA 2009 de Superkart.
Même s’ils sont encore dix pilotes à conserver une chance mathématique de l’emporter, il semble très probable que la couronne de champion sera coiffée soit par le Britannique Gavin Bennett (Anderson-DEA), champion en 2007, soit par l’Allemand Peter Elkmann (MS Kart-Yamaha), le champion en titre. Le plus à l’aise des deux protagonistes au seuil de cette troisième et ultime épreuve du championnat est incontestablement Bennett.
Fort de trois victoires sur quatre, son avance au classement provisoire est plutôt confortable et il aura l’avantage de pouvoir calquer sa course sur celle de son adversaire, l’ex-pilote de F3 Peter Elkmann.
Elkmann, toutefois, jouera son va-tout jusqu’au bout.
L’an dernier, à la même époque, il avait abordé l’épreuve néerlandaise sans être leader au championnat, sans avoir le droit à la moindre erreur et il l’avait finalement emporté.

Sachant qu’il leur faudra un sacré coup de pouce de circonstances vraiment exceptionnelles pour accéder au titre, des pilotes comme Lee Harpham (Anderson-FPE), Mark Owens (ADE-DEA), Carl Hulme (Anderson-FPE), Guido Kleinemeyer (PVP-BRC), John Riley (Anderson-Rotax), Damien Payart (PVP-FPE), Malcolm Crowe (Anderson-FPE) et Trevor Roberts (Anderson-BRC) auront à cœur de finir la tournée européenne sur une victoire d’étape.

L’Irlandais du Nord, Trevor Roberts, a fait étalage d’une grande forme au cours des dernières semaines. L’ex-Champion du Monde de Superkart (1995) a d’ailleurs remporté une victoire en Course 2 lors de l’épreuve précédente, à Most en République tchèque, et tire désormais la quintessence de son moteur canadien BRC.

Au sein du peloton, on notera la participation de deux pilotes automobiles de notoriété, avec le Suédois Thomas Johansson (Anderson-FPE) et le Néerlandais Cor Euser (MS-TM), alors que le continent océanien comptera deux représentants.

En plus de Carlo Chermaz (PVP-PVP), déjà présent lors des deux premières joutes du Championnat d’Europe, un autre Australien viendra se joindre à l’élite européenne : Sam Zavaglia (Anderson-PVP), champion 2009 dans son pays.

Avec 55 pilotes, de 11 nationalités différentes, Assen sera la course la plus fournie de la saison.

Les pilotes apprécient l’accueil qui leur est réservé aux Pays-Bas et savent combien les 50 000 spectateurs présents chaque année suivent avec intérêt les deux courses de Superkart inscrites au programme d’une manifestation qui verra aussi entrer en piste des motos, des F3 et des Formules Renault, ainsi que les GT et les Voitures de Tourisme du «Dutch Supercar Challenge».

Et ce n’est pas sans une certaine fierté que les pilotes de Superkart rappelleront, dans ce temple de la moto qu’est le TT-Circuit d’Assen, que leur discipline si particulière compte désormais un fan supplémentaire : il y a quelques semaines, Valentino Rossi a remporté à Laguna Seca une course de démonstration de Superkart organisée en lever de rideau du GP Moto des USA.

THE 2007 AND 2008 CHAMPIONS FACE TO FACE

The most popular Superkart event of the season, the “Rizla Racing Day” held at Assen (Netherlands), will crown the 2009 CIK-FIA European Superkart Champion on Sunday 9 August 2009. Even though ten drivers still have a mathematical chance of landing the title, it seems very likely that the champion’s crown will be won either by the Briton Gavin Bennett (Anderson-DEA), champion in 2007, or by the title-holder, Germany’s Peter Elkmann (MS Kart-Yamaha). The more confident of the two protagonists before this third and final championship event is undoubtedly Bennett. With three wins in four races under his belt, his lead in the provisional classification is rather comfortable and he will have the advantage of being able to model his behaviour on that of his opponent, the former Formula 3 driver Peter Elkmann. Elkmann will however probably stake his all until the very final lap. At the same time last year he did not lead the championship when he started the Dutch event so he had to get it all right, and he managed to win both the race and the championship.

Considering that they will need quite a big boost from some really exceptional circumstances to get the title, drivers like Lee Harpham (Anderson-FPE), Mark Owens (ADE-DEA), Carl Hulme (Anderson-FPE), Guido Kleinemeyer (PVP-BRC), John Riley (Anderson-Rotax), Damien Payart (PVP-FPE), Malcolm Crowe (Anderson-FPE) and Trevor Roberts (Anderson-BRC) will be determined to conclude the European tour with a stage victory. The Northern Irishman Trevor Roberts has shown he was in great form over the last few weeks. As a matter of fact, the former Superkart World Champion (1995) won Race 2 of the previous event, at Most in the Czech Republic, and is now making the most of his Canadian BRC engine. Within the field, it is worth noting the participation of two seeded automobile drivers, namely the Swede Thomas Johansson (Anderson-FPE) and the Dutchman Cor Euser (MS-TM). Additionally, the Oceanian continent will have two representatives; as well as Carlo Chermaz (PVP-PVP), who already entered the first two rounds of the European Championship, another Australian will be joining the European Superkart elite: Sam Zavaglia (Anderson-PVP), the 2009 champion of his country.

Boasting 55 drivers of 11 nationalities, Assen will be the Superkart race with the largest number of competitors this season. Drivers enjoy the welcome reserved for them in the Netherlands and know that the 50,000 spectators present each year follow with great interest both Superkart races entered on the programme of a meeting which includes motorcycles, F3 and Formula Renault, as well as the GT and Touring Cars of the “Dutch Supercar Challenge”. And it is not without a certain pride that, at the TT-Circuit of Assen’s temple of motorcycles, the Superkart drivers will keep in mind that their so special form of sport now has an extra fan: a few weeks ago at Laguna Seca, Valentino Rossi won a Superkart demonstration race held as a curtain raiser to the US MotoGP.
